Designers from around the world are gathering in Milan to exchange ideas and showcase projects in light of this year’s theme, “Materia Natura,” which seeks to cultivate a culture of mindful design.
This week, Milan takes center stage in the world of design with a many events, exhibitions and installations spanning from April 15 to April 21. Fuorisalone is held in conjuction with Salone del Mobile Milano during Milano Design Week. Designers, architects, schools, universities, and institutions exchange ideas that shape our present while focusing on the future of our environment. The practices of design play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of mindful design, with emphasis on sustainability as a core principle and essential value in the creative process. This ethos is captured in this year’s theme “Materia Natura”.
Materia Natura
“Materia Natura” is the theme of the 2024 edition of Fuorisalone. With its focus on nature and matter, Fuorisalone encourages a deep exploration of the connection between the two worlds. The topic of matter and the attempts to transform it have long been central to human nature, as humans engage with nature and interpret their relationship with the natural world. While the term “natura” (nature) serves as a strong reminder of the most pressing and current issues we face today, particularly in promoting more sustainable and environmentally conscious solutions, the term “materia” (matter) initiates a dialogue with design, creative thinking, strategic planning and the potential for transformations. Building upon previously explored concepts, the theme “Materia Natura” is an extension of past Fuorisalone themes, including “Forme dell’Abitare”, “Tra Spazio e Tempo” and “Laboratorio Futuro”. The thematic continuity upholds the values of mindful design culture and emphasizes the pivotal role of sustainability in the design process. The central theme of “Materia Natura” enhances the dynamic interplay between humans and their environment, setting the tone for Milan Design Week 2024.
