For over a century, race-horse owners, trainers, jockeys and visitors from around the world gather to experience the highlight of horse races in the winter paradise of St. Moritz. White Turf extends beyond the racing realm, transforming into a social event as well. Spread over the frozen 765,000 sq.m. lake, a race track, captivating music, tents and catering opportunities offer a winter experience, creating a sporty holiday sensation.
Horse Races
The main attraction of the White Turf is the jockeys racing with their horses on the frozen lake against the backdrop of a winter wonderland. The program includes flat and gallop races as well as trotting and skikjöring.
Skikjöring is a sport unique to White Turf, making the event renowned internationally. It consist of horses pulling people on skis at high speeds.
Trotting races have taken place since the inception of White Turf and involve men sitting on sulkies adjusted to light Norwegian sledges with aluminum blades that are pulled by the horses.
Gallop races, introduced later in 1911, determine which noble thoroughbreds can best cope with the unusual surface while racing to win.
